TRAINING: Members will undergo GEM Environmental Orientation, AmeriCorps Orientation, meaning of National Service, Member Prohibited Activities, how to use your Education Award, Safety, and Leave No Trace trainings upon arrival.
Internship Term: 1 year
Start Date: Upon the successful completion of Federal Background Check (please list your availability below)
Internship Pay: Equivalent to $17.67/ hour
TRAINING: Members will undergo GEM Environmental Orientation, AmeriCorps Orientation, meaning of National Service, Member Prohibited Activities, how to use your Education Award, Safety, and Leave No Trace trainings upon arrival.
PROGRAM BENEFITS:
INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION: Primary duties for range interns will be to assist in upland data collection for the range program, as well as to take inventory of range improvements on allotments that have not had range improvement data uploaded into GIS.
Due to the specialized nature of vegetation monitoring, interns should possess a desire to learn, or have satisfactorily completed courses, in plant science or botany, biology, and/or have an interest in livestock management. Interns will be responsible for collecting range improvement data for input into the GIS database using tablets and the esri "Collector” mobile application. They may also be cross-trained to collect water inventory data for water rights workload, dependent on the availability and status of the water rights program. Often times field work will be performed on foot in terrain that may often be steep and extremely rugged. This position is offered through G.E.M. Environmental NFP in cooperation with the Bureau of Land Management where participants will be minimum wage employees of GEM Environmental NFP working under the mentorship of a BLM official. Project mentors will work with the participant to guide their projects, introduce them to the work and mission of the BLM and other federal agencies, and broaden their network of professional contacts.
CLERICAL AND FIELD WORK: To prepare and submit detailed reports of data collected; to assist in the collection, storage, and maintenance of field data; to perform GIS manipulation and analysis, create maps, as well as assist on other related functions.
LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT: The participant will participate in rigorous projects that focus skills and reveal the work qualities of the individual. The project provides the opportunity for the participant to develop or apply personal responsibility in their work. The rigorous schedule of the project helps develop project management skills. The participant will also work with multiple stakeholders in their project, which will help the participant develop communication skills, and experience navigating organizational hierarchies.
QUALIFICATIONS: Applicant must be a recent graduate who is able to complete the term without interruption; they must have a background in and have taken classes in ecology, biology, botany, or livestock management; have some experience in or be willing to quickly learn GIS applications for recording and collecting data; Have the ability to work in both a team environment and individually; have the ability to work with the public; applicant must have a valid driver’s license and a good driving record; applicant will undergo a government security background clearance prior to starting this position

Individuals interested in obtaining a Public Land Corp (PLC) certification with 2-year non-competitive hiring status for federal employment must be between the ages of 16-30 or 35 for veterans at the time of their enrollment, and must serve at least 120 hours of their term outdoors in the field completing service directly related to their project.
