Project #1012 -  GEM Corps AmeriCorps Crew Member                                                                             
Quarter Time Member - 450 Hour Requirement
Name of Program: GEM Corps
Position title: AmeriCorps Crew Member
Previous Experience: None Required
Criminal History Check: NSOPW, and Criminal History Checks are required for before program involvement.

Program Benefits: During their term, members will become eligible to receive the following:
  • $6,750 in non-taxable Living Allowance Stipends per year (equivalent to $15.00/hour)
  • $1,718.25 Segal Education Award
  • 10 hour OSHA General Industries Certification
  • Participation in personal and professional development opportunities including resume building and mock interviews
  • Professional training certificates
  • Civic Leadership Certificate from Prescott College

Training: Members will undergo GEM Environmental Orientation, AmeriCorps Orientation, meaning of National Service, Member Prohibited Activities, how to use your Education Award, Safety, and Leave No Trace trainings upon arrival.
Potential Trainings that Member may receive but are not limited to may include: First Aid/CPR, Wilderness First Aid, Native Plant Identification, Map and Compass, GPS training, Chainsaw/ Sawyer training, vehicle driver safety training. 

Tasks and responsibilities: Member tasks may include some or all of the following.
  • Construction and maintenance on hiking and biking trails around the Prescott area.
  • Non-native plant identification and removal.
  • Re-vegetation of native plants and Habitat Restoration.
  • Restoring and improving environmental and cultural resources.
  • Soil erosion prevention.
  • Constructing or maintaining fences.
  • Conducting wildlife, wilderness, and ecological surveys and assessments.
  • Participation in fuels reduction and forest health projects.
  • Professional development trainings and classes..
  • Resource planning, technical data monitoring and analysis, and mapping projects
  • Creating maps and survey reports for resource management projects
 
GEM Corps crews accomplish meaningful outdoor conservation projects alongside a variety of land management agencies and community partners. These partnerships provide unique and beneficial opportunities for all GEM Corps Members. Members will serve a approximately 15-20 hours per week completing work on community conservation projects and 1-5 hours completing professional development and/or leadership training. Over the course of their AmeriCorps service term, members will complete a total of 450 hours under the mentorship of professional skill trainers and community leaders.
  
Physical Requirements:
  • Repeatedly Lifting and moving heavy objects over a work shift. 
  • Performing duties in inclement weather on steep or uneven terrain.
  • Projects may involve considerable physical efforts such as climbing ladders, kneeling, walking long distances over uneven surfaces.
  • Bending at the waist or remaining in a crouched position for extended periods of time.

​Tools and Equipment:
  • Members may be trained to utilize tools including chain saws, brush cutters, shovels, wheelbarrows, pickaxe, herbicide spraying equipment, or other tools.
  • Members may also utilize GPS or similar tracking equipment/software.

Performance Requirements:
  • Willing to accept responsibility in a dependable and flexible fashion.
  • Ready to take initiative in doing assigned work without prompting and seeks out other tasks that help the team accomplish their collective goals.
  • Completes work assignments in a safe, professional, and efficient manner.
  • Works hard with a positive mental attitude, in all weather and terrain conditions maintaining safe working environment.
  • Must be able to accurately recognize and assess dangerous work sites or activities to prevent injuries from happening.
  • Must follow all Crew Leader, Project Supervisor, or Staff instructions regarding safety in the workplace.

 Minimum Eligibility requirements for an AmeriCorps participant:
  • Documentation proving right to work as a US Citizen, US National, or US Lawful Permanent Resident Alien.
  • Have HS Diploma or agree to obtain diploma or GED prior to using Ed Award.
  • To be at least 17 years of age at the commencement of service​

    Participant Application Form

    AmeriCorps service positions are open for all that wish to apply. Successful candidates must be willing to commit to work in an environment including a diverse community of participants for the duration of their specified term. Individuals interested in obtaining a Public Land Corp (PLC) certification with 2-year non-competitive hiring status for federal employment must be between the ages of 16-30 or 35 for veterans at the time of their enrollment, and must serve at least 120 hours of their term spent outdoors in the field completing service directly related to their project.

    Education          
    Provide the name of the school you are currently enrolled in or recently graduated from.
    If applicable
    Applicants must have a GPA above 2.5.
    If you have had a parent or guardian earn a 2-year or 4-year college degree from an accredited institution, select no as your answer. This does not include trade or technical schools.

    Applicants approved for interviews must pass a federal background check before the project start date. 
    This does not eliminate you from contention, so please explain your situation to further your chances of acceptance into the program.
