Project #1002 - Scientific Team Lead

Start Date: Upon the successful completion of a Background Check (please list your availability in application)
Full Time: 40 hours per week.
Position Pay: $18 to $22 per hour depending on experience.
Housing and relocation: up to $5000/ year in additional housing or relocation allowance may be reimbursed for qualifying applicants.
Travel: Travel and fuel costs will be expensed while completing project related work.
Benefits: Medical, Dental, Vision, and Retirement Savings plans available after 30 days of employment.
POSITION DESCRIPTION: The Abandoned Mine Land (AML) program is tasked with identifying abandoned mine features throughout the state of New Mexico. The Staff Scientist will take lead for a team that identifies and records abandoned mine features on public lands across New Mexico. Mining features will be recorded using Global Positioning System (GPS) tools with ArcGIS software where data are then downloaded to a master ArcGIS file and processed in a geodatabase. Most survey work is done on foot in terrain that is often steep and extremely rugged. Crews will identify mining related features in a survey of a mineral districts where they methodically traverse the area searching for features such as audits, shafts, trenches, structures, prospects, and waste/ overburden dumps. At no point will the employee or team members access or enter mining features while on project or be asked to participate in activities that exceed assumed safety risks associated with recreational access as prescribed in resource management plans of federal agencies with surface management responsibilities and all participants will be required to follow safety guidelines administered by OSHA and MSHA. This position is offered through GEM Corps where AmeriCorps members serving as Interns will work with an AML Team Leader under the direction of a GEM Staff Scientist as Geographer's Assistants. The position may require the employee to travel and stay for prolonged periods in a field camp setting with limited access to resources or facilities on unimproved public land.
CLERICAL AND FIELD WORK: To prepare and submit detailed reports of data collected; to assist in the collection, storage, and maintenance of field data; to perform GIS manipulation and analysis, create maps, as well as assist or take lead on other office and field related functions.The Scientific Supervisor may be require to write and post recruitment adds as well as conduct routine public outreach functions in a recruitment capacity, to preform interviews, evaluate candidates, and set schedules for field teams. This positions requires a mix of office and field work, but the weekly schedule will depend on the individual's ability to effectively set field schedules and access or adjust project timelines according to project deadlines.
FLEET MANAGEMENT AND MAINTENANCE: Duties will include the service and maintenance of fleet vehicles and equipment both at a shop or in a field setting. The employee will be tasked with recording fuel and maintenance logs to ensure regular preventative maintenance occurs and any required repairs necessary to ensure safe vehicle operations are completed.
LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT: The employee will participate in projects that focus skills and reveal the work qualities of the individual and their team. The project provides the opportunity for the employee to develop or apply personal responsibility in their work. The rigorous schedule of the project helps develop project management skills. The employee will also work with multiple project stakeholders during their project, which will help the employee develop communication skills, and experience navigating organizational hierarchies.
QUALIFICATIONS: Applicant must have a background in and have taken classes in geology, geography, or other STEM related field; have some experience in or be willing to quickly learn GIS applications for recording and collecting data; Have the ability to work in both a team environment and individually; have the ability to work with the public; the applicant must have a valid driver’s license and a good driving record; applicant will undergo a government security background clearance prior to starting this position.

To have the ability to work for extended periods outdoors, to be able to hike in rugged terrain where there are no existing trails, and to lift more than 20 pounds at repetitive intervals throughout the work shift.
Work Environment:
The position will require the individual to travel for distances sometimes exceeding 500 miles in one trip; to camp and work outdoors in sometimes inclement or unfavorable weather conditions; to be exposed to muscle fatigue and sometimes extreme temperatures; or to work indoors for extended periods on computers with illuminated displays.
Background Check:
This position is a critical position paid for in part/ or full by federal funding and is subject to a background check. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of background investigation including criminal history and identity check.

- Bachelor’s degree in Geology, a related Earth Science Degree, or other STEM Field.
- Experience writing/editing and proofreading a variety of technical materials.
- Communication skills to interact with diverse groups of individuals to research, secure and/or provide information, clarify situations, resolve problems, and ensure cooperation among individuals.
- Organizational and time management skills to coordinate projects and people, prioritize and track multiple projects simultaneously, and meet critical deadlines.
- Experience with computer hardware and software for word processing, desktop publishing, spreadsheets, web editing and presentation tasks/assignments.
- Basic Orienteering skills and knowledge of Public Land Survey Systems, Township & Range, and Topographic Maps.
Preferred Qualifications for Selection:
- Experience producing written materials for Project Reports.
- Experience using esri products such as ArcMap, ArcGIS, or ArcMap Mobile.
- Knowledge of and skill to apply various academic style guidelines.
- Experience in sample preparation and collection, or data preservation.
